AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH NOVEMBER'S MENTEE OF THE MONTH: EKOMOBONG ABIA!
1.What are your passions in STEM and what motivates you to pursue them? Do you have any passions outside of STEM and how did they develop?

I am passionate about all Areas of STEM, particularly Science. This is a passion which has been manifested in my late night spent at making random things and my strong belief that it’s many fields will help change the world. My Keenness for Problem Solving, Logic puzzles, Mathematics and even my unending love for Science has stood in a perfect stead to have a career that nurtured this passions. One of my STEM passion is encouraging people to explore skills and career in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics to help build a better future.
Motivation is an integral part of life and work. But what actually motivates and inspires us is a personal thing and unique to each and everyone of us. My motivation comes from visions, goal setting and celebrating small successes. Talking about my passions outside of STEM. I love Singing, Baking, Decorating and learning new hand skills. I come up with creative ideas to improve something or make new. That’s what had really helped me to develop my passions outside STEM.

2.How has your experience in the 1000 Girls, 1000 Futures program been so far and what has been your favourite experience?
My experience in the 1000 Girls, 1000 Futures program thus far has been amazing. I have learned and experienced so many new things in such a short period of time and it has gone by so fast. 1000 Girls program is a very welcoming place, and from the first day, I felt at home here. I have made many new friends from different backgrounds. My favorite experience has come from my pod and a few Mentors. Believe me when I say, everyone in this program is an inspiration to me.
3. What do you think helped you become mentee of the month? Do you think something particular—such as passion projects or initiatives—made you stand out from the rest of the students in the program?
I would say it’s my dedication to the program that really helped me. I made sure I commented on Every single post and also encouraged everyone ( mentors and mentees) in their work. Everyone here needs support and I always feel happy doing that. I made sure to participate in AMA’s and discussion posts too. I would also say that hard work pays. I’ll encourage all the Mentees who would like to win the award to persevere. Perseverance breeds success.
4.How are you keeping a balance between your schoolwork, family and friends, responsibilities, and passion project(s)?
To keep a balance, I set priorities and Realistic goals. Not everything can be done all at once. Setting realistic goals and writing them down helps in keeping my priorities in line. I also take care of myself and set aside Study Time. I dedicate time to updating the calendar and designating ‘School work time’s. I review course syllabus and plan ahead. I become more organized and take advantage of support groups too. Also, I keep updated schedules so I’m able to spend some time with family and loved ones. My health is my biggest responsibility so I set aside time to relax and recover. I make sure I get a good nights sleep as that is very essential.
5.What would you say to girls who are inspired to pursue a STEM career?
I’ll tell all the girls who are inspired to pursue a STEM career to Be strong and courageous. Always believe in yourself and all you want your life to be You can never make things happen, so never underestimate yourself . Change people’s lives, Create a difference, Change your society, Speak up for others, Take risks, Overcome challenges and make sure to become the Champion of Girl’s and Women’s right. I’ll end by saying “Put on confidence as your best accessory”. Being confident is the key to life. Don’t be afraid to be you.
